Apple's iOS 8 is less than a day old and has already passed a 14 percent adoption rate, according to data from Mixpanel.
As of 6 a.m. PT Thursday, iOS 8 showed an adoption rate of 14.22 percent on the mobile analytics firm's chart. As of the mobile operating system's launch at 10 a.m. PT Wednesday, Mixpanel showed a 0.53 percent adoption rate, which likely included the beta version that had already been in the hands of developers.
A 14 percent adoption rate in less than 24 hours sounds impressive. But it pales in comparison with the iOS 7 launch a year ago. On September 18, 2013, when iOS 7 launched, Mixpanel recorded an adoption rate of about 15 percent before the day had even ended. The day after iOS 7 was released, the rate shot up to 38 percent.
We'll see how far and fast the iOS 8 adoption rate rises as the day progresses. But the difference in adoption speed between iOS 7 and iOS 8 isn't necessarily surprising since version 7 was a more highly publicized release with its massively revamped user interface, new system controls and notifications, iTunes Radio and a slew of other enhancements.
According to Mixpanel's results, iOS 7 is still firmly in the lead with 81 percent of users still running it as of Thursday morning. Older versions of iOS are collectively stuck at a little more than 4 percent.
Mixpanel's data is based on the company's analysis of mobile-app usage.
"We get data from users using our customers' apps and heavily anonymize it," a company spokesperson explained to CNET. "We work with thousands of apps and that means tens (of millions) to hundreds of millions of users across all kinds of devices."
