Vizio's reasonably priced 4K Ultra HD P-Series TVs are out now Vizio's P-Series 4K TVs max out at 70 inches

Ultra HD - or 4K - TVs look like they might succeed where 3D TVs failed and actually resonate with consumers, but first we have to be able to afford them.

In comes Vizio with its P-Series 4K TVs, the first reasonably priced sets in the category, available now.

The Vizio P-Series LED TVs debuted in January at CES 2014, and we went eyes-on with the 70-inch version in September.

Now the sets, ranging from 50 inches up to 70 inches, have gone on sale on Vizio.com.

At 50 inches, the smallest Vizio P-Series 4K TV costs just $999. They range from 55-, 60-, and 65-inches up to the 70-incher, which costs $2,500,

And on the company's Ultra HD web hub the company even addresses the alleged myth that "there's nothing to watch in 4K."

The site explains the ways that DVDs and Blu-rays, sports and games are upscaled to 4K, and says that more and more Ultra HD content is being produced all the time.

The P-Series LED TVs also come with a QWERTY-equipped double-sided remote.

Sony's giving five free 4K movies to Ultra HD TV buyers

Sony's giving five free 4K movies to Ultra HD TV buyers Here's what's on offer

Sony is offering five free 4K resolution movies for anyone who buys a 4K Sony TV between now and 24 December 2014.

One of the key concerns for anyone thinking about 'going 4K' with their next TV is where to actually get 4K content from. Sony is addressing that problem with its latest deal.

Buy one of Sony's selected 4K TVs and you'll receive a portable hard drive pre-loaded with your choice of five films from a selection of 10. TVs in on the deal include the Sony X9 and S90 models.

4K films on offer include span classics like Ghostbusters, The Patriot and Total Recall, and more modern releases Captain Phillips, Battle: LA, Salt and Moneyball. Topping off the selection of ten are Premium Rush and the two Amazing Spider-Man films.

While it'll be a great way to show off your new TV, you don't have these films forever. Baked-in DRM means you'll only be able to watch them until 30 September 2016.

You won't get the hard drive with the TV either, but will have to redeem it post-purchase, with a deadline of 31 January 2015 to claim. Once you've claimed it, it'll be delivered straight to your door.

Aside from deals like this, the best way to get hold of 4K content is through Netflix, which streams a limited number of titles to a limited number of sets in the higher resolution.

IFA 2014: Toshiba's U Series Ultra HD 4K TV gets a showing at IFA 2014

Toshiba's U Series Ultra HD 4K TV gets a showing at IFA 2014 Toshiba's U Series Ultra HD 4K TV

Toshiba is showing off its next generation Ultra HD 4K TV at IFA 2014, with the U series aiming to convince us that it's time to upgrade from our tired old Full HD television.

Although Tosh is at pains to point out this is only a prototype, the company will launch the U series in 2015.

According to Toshiba, the television showcases significant new features, including an improved MediaGuide replay, CEVO Picture and HEVC support.

There's also a brand new design - which inevitably gets described as premium and slim.

Don't expect any more detail on launch date or the all-important price, but we doubt this is going to be competing with the budget brands in our local outlets when it does arrive next year.
