Google's Project Tango tablet has hit the Play Store, but you can't buy it yet

Google's Project Tango tablet has hit the Play Store, but you can't buy it yet You know when you've been Tango'd

Google's gone a bit quiet regarding news on its Project Tango tablet, leading us to wonder if we might not see a 2014 launch after all.

But lo and behold, the development kit tablet has just shown up on the Google Play Store. The bad news - you're not allowed to buy it. Yet.

For the uninitiated, Project Tango is Google's interesting take on the future of tablets, which uses cameras and sensors to map its surrounding environment - and the things in it - in 3D.

The potential applications are exciting, but for now all we know for sure is that the tablet packs an Nvidia Tegra K1 processor, a 1920x1200 7-inch screen (at 323 ppi) a 1MP rear sensor, 1MP front-facing camers, 4GB of RAM, and an impressive 128GB of storage.

Unfortunately there's no word on pricing or availability, but hey, the fact it's there at all is a good sign, right?

Android's Material Design look hits Google Play Store with 5.0 update

Sunday, October 12, 2014

Android's Material Design look hits Google Play Store with 5.0 update The new look is flatter, but very bold (credit: Phandroid)

As Android L gets nearer and nearer Google has begun in earnest the process of updating its various core apps with the new Material Design aesthetic.

The latest beneficiary of this refresh is the Google Play Store app, which has just been updated to version 5.0.31.

The new Play Store app has the look, with a flatter yet bolder-colored aesthetic, and also comes with some UI changes.

Overall it seems to be a positive change, though naturally your mileage may vary.

The new Google Play Store app, for example, places the "what's new" section of each app right at the top, so you no longer need to scroll down to see recent changes and updates.

There are new icons as well, and a redesigned sidebar.

The Google Play 5.0 update is rolling out to Android devices now, although if you don't want to wait you can head to Phandroid to download the APK and sideload it manually.

Enjoy this test drive of Android L's design language before the newest Android update begins rolling out later this month.

Google Glass released to everyone on the Google Play store

Google Glass released to everyone on the Google Play store We're going to be seeing a lot more of this sort of thing

Those wanting to don Google Glass and hashtag-explore the world through a digital lens previously had to jump through hoops to get one, but no more.

Google has finally - finally - begun selling the Google Glass Explorer Edition in white, black, grey, blue, or red to anyone who feels like dropping $1,500 (about £920, AU$1,600) in the Google Play store.

That's right, Google chose not to lower Glass's price to make it appeal to more consumers.

"Glass is smart eyewear that lets you live lighter, and stay in the here and now," the gadget's listing says. Maybe it means lightening your wallet?

The rumor that the next Google Glass will look more or less like a pair of normal glasses may help explain the lack of a price drop here.

Google may wait for the next edition to really push Glass to consumers.

In any case buying Glass through the Play store also gets you a free frame or shade to go with, so that's something at least.

Google already shook up smartwatches this year with Android Wear. Are smart glasses next?

Granted, Google's competition in facewear, from Lenovo's prototype to Epson's Moverio, is more sparse.

It's proven more difficult to convince people to wear something on their faces (no thanks to the prohibitive price and release, limitations to be sure). If anyone can do it it's probably Google, but it looks like they may be waiting for the next edition of Google Glass to really try.
