Looks like Google's Glass Basecamp stores might be closing their doors

Wednesday, November 26, 2014

Looks like Google's Glass Basecamp stores might be closing their doors But where will we try on different Google Glass colors?

The past couple of weeks have not been great for Google Glass users, and now to top it off it looks like Glass Basecamp locations in the US may be shutting down.

Google Glass Basecamps are the pop-ups in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles where Glass users could get technical support, try out different colors and accessories and more.

But according to Phandroid these stores are no longer taking new appointments, indicating they may be shutting down.

The Google Glass Basecamps were likely always meant to be temporary, but with the consumer version of Glass likely pushed into 2015 it probably isn't a good sign if they're closing already.

Then again this could just be a natural part of Google's transition into the consumer Glass launch or into purely online sales on Google Play for its existing and future Glass headsets.

We've asked Google to confirm whether the Basecamps are closing and what that means for Google Glass, and we'll update if we hear back.

Looks like Vudu made a streaming stick, and it's a Walmart exclusive

Looks like Vudu made a streaming stick, and it's a Walmart exclusive Walmart's Vudu Spark: really, really awesome if you only like Vudu

Only Walmart would have the balls - or the stupidity - to launch a streaming dongle that only supports a single service.

Welcome to the Vudu Spark, a streaming stick that only runs Vudu, according to an FCC filing.

Vudu is owned by Walmart, so it makes a perverse sort of non-sense the device would be dedicated to only that app.

You know, in Bizarro World.

The Spark will likely arrive in time for the holidays, though Walmart and Vudu haven't made any announcements yet.

Even so, there's no doubt as to its functionality, because the FCC leaked the Spark's user manual as well. It appears to have been taken down since.

The manual describes the set-up process, wherein you connect the Spark to Wi-Fi and it boots straight into the Vudu app. And there's no mention of any other functions.

Meanwhile the Chromecast, Roku Streaming Stick and Fire TV Stick definitely still exist, making the Vudu Spark objectively the worst option among many streaming dongle competitors, unless Walmart is literally giving it away for free. Who knows?

This is how much better GTA 5 looks on the PS4 Makes the PS3 feel like a PS2

A trip to Los Santos on the PS4 looks like being very special indeed. Rockstar Games has just revealed a new comparison video that demonstrates GTA 5's graphical jump to the next generation.

The video shows the PlayStation 3 alongside the PlayStation 4 remastered version of the game, with the latter adding a significant layer of extra detail. And if that wasn't enough, there's the highly anticipated first-person mode to look forward to.

Rockstar has confirmed that the blockbuster title will also be coming to both Xbox One and PC, running at 1080p resolution and 30fps. The PC version of the game will also support a 4K resolution mode.

The next generation Grand Theft Auto 5 will land on November 18 for the PS4 and Xbox One with the PC version following in early 2015.

'Nobody wants a smartwatch that looks like a calculator,' says Moto exec Moto 360 - definitely not looking like a calculator

Motorola believes that it will remains a step ahead of its rivals in the smartwatch world, despite the first round competitors for the Moto 360 beginning to surface.

Speaking to TechRadar at the UK launch event for the 360, corporate vice president for EMEA & APAC, Magnus Ahlqvist, expressed his joy at the smartwatch's early impact and told us about the decision to back a round design that has captured the imagination.

"I think the cool thing about Motorola as a company is that it is very focused on what the consumer wants," said Ahlqvist. "Lots of companies say that they are but we actually care.

"The early smartwatches looked like gadgets - like small calculators on your wrist - and that's not what people wanted.

"They wanted their smartwatch to look good to wear and to be proud of it, so that was the basis of what we did for the Moto 360.

"A lot of craftsmanship went into the design - to maximise the screen size and make the display so vibrant and there is a lot thought gone into the details."

Given the attention the 360 garnered it is no surprise that a number of manufacturers are now jumping on a more traditional watch shape for their next generation of smartwatches.

The LG G Watch R was announced at IFA 2014 in Berlin, and many other options are in the pipeline, but Ahlqvist is not fazed.

"First of all we are well positioned," he said. "I personally don't think there is anything as beautiful and well-crafted as the Moto 360 in the market.

"And we are not sitting still so we are a step ahead. There is a lot of competition but I don't think that's a bad thing because it spurs innovation.

"There remains a lot of room for us to continue to innovate."

IFA 2014: Asus ZenWatch actually looks like something we'd like to wear

Asus ZenWatch actually looks like something we'd like to wear Glass and leather

Asus has announced the ZenWatch, with its Android Wear offering boasting a stitched leather strap and 2.5D curved glass.

The smartwatch arena is becoming increasingly competitive, but Asus is hoping that its design cues can make it a popular option.

The watch will support the Asus ZenUI Wellness app with its 9-axis sensor and pair with any Android phone from 4.3 up.

But the big news according to Asus is the way the watch looks suggesting that the design philosophy is 'Start with People'. Or at least their wrists we hope.

Other features include Watch Unlock, Tap Tap, Remote Camera, Cover to Mute, Find My Phone and Presentation Control.

Regardless, it's definitely one of the more attractive smartwatches we've seen so far - so here are a couple more piccies for your delectation.
